Dictionary Project

Every year since 2005, the Rotary Club of Portsmouth has purchased and delivered “Webster’s Dictionary for Students, Special Encyclopedia Edition” to all sixth grade students in Scioto County.  The Rotary Club has provided dictionaries to over 7,000 students in 12 school districts in Scioto County since the start of the dictionary project.  The cost of the project last year was approximately $2,000.00.
Dictionaries help students improve literacy skills and become better learners.  The dictionaries provided by Rotary to the students include definitions for more than 37,000 words and phrases as well as an encyclopedia section that contains world maps, countries of the world, states of the U.S., information on U.S. government and laws, presidents of the U.S., important events in American history and more.  Response from teachers and students has been very positive.
The Rotary Club of Portsmouth is looking forward to continuing the dictionary project for years to come. For more information on this project contact the Chair Linda Woods-Jones (lwoods@yourppl.org)
